· From The Founder

My name is Dima Hendricks, and I was born with Sickle Cell (SS). Sickle Cell is a debilitating blood disorder that affects millions of people throughout the world.

Over the years, I suffered from many complications, including severe chronic pain. Although my life is filled with pain and hundreds of hospitalizations, I am a relentless advocate. In addition to facilitating health workshops and panel discussions, I served as a board member of the Greater Boston Sickle Cell Association.
Through the pain, I was a dance teacher.
Through the pain, I was able to receive a graduate degree.
Through the pain, I reigned as a pageant queen. I held the titles of Miss Black Dorchester USA, Miss Black Massachusetts USA and Mrs. Massachusetts International.
Through the pain, I was able to start a family. (My proudest achievement)
As I get older, I experience painful sickle cell crisis and other complications more frequently. Unfortunately, I stopped dancing and doing the things I love to do the most. At this point, I want to stay around longer for my two children.
That is why I was so excited to participate in the future gene therapy procedure. If successful, I will no longer have sickle cell and live a pain-free life.
With all of the appointments and long-term stays in the hospital, I would not be able to work for extended periods. There were moments when we could make ends meet. With this in mind, I started a fundraiser to assist my family. I called it #ThroughThePain.

I found #ThroughThePain fitting and empowering as I have still been able to experience an incredible life.

Throughout this journey, I have had several conversations with patient leaders, health care providers and individuals with other chronic illnesses. I even took the time to visit with a few of my friends with sickle cell while they were in the hospital. With each visit, I provided patients with toiletries and other needs to make their hospital stay comfortable. With each interaction, there was a recurring theme: when it comes to painful chronic illnesses, there is a lack of awareness, a lack of support, and a lack of consideration for patients and their families.
What began as a simple fundraiser to help my family has transformed into a desire to help other patients and families transition #ThroughThePain.
With this in mind, I created the #ThroughThePain platform. www.ThroughThePain.org
This website will also be a lifestyle blogging site for individuals with chronic illnesses to engage in a community for support, advocacy resources and fly gear. The Movement is to inspire individuals with chronic disease to push beyond their pain.
#ThroughThePain ambassadors will lead the platform.
